Grand River Amazing Race Will Take A Year Off To Plan Its Biggest Race Yet

Waterloo, ON – February 28, 2014

The Grand River Amazing Race (GRAR) crew is taking a year off to plan a bigger, better race in 2015.

The GRAR has grown significantly since its inception in 2010. The race has been supported by the Woolwich Kin Club.

Last year, 39 teams raced raising a total of $44,527 for various local charities .That number was a significant jump from 2012 when 24 teams raced and $22,000 money was raised.

“By taking a year off the race crew will have time to attract new teams and volunteers, develop race challenges, and further enhance sponsorship opportunities,” said Brenda McBay, Race Director with the GRAR.

The goal is going to be to double the amount raised for local charities to $100,000. Charities who have benefitted from the race in previous years have been Woolwich Community Services, Women’s Crisis Centre of Waterloo Region, Parents for Community Living and Skate Elmira.

“What a great way to raise money and support the charity of your choice” said Kim Laliberte, whose team won the race last year. “It was a fun event and I can’t wait to race again next year.”
The theme of the 2015 GRAR will be centered on the popular book and movie series ‘The Hunger Games.’ During the race contestants will navigate their way through an undisclosed course with clues to the next site.

Registration will begin in January of 2015. Race day is set for June 20, 2015. Teams of 2-3 participants will need to raise a minimum of $150 towards a charity which will benefit from the race. Those who raise over $150 will earn special advantages; such as the use of a canoe or a map of the race.
